MISSION
OUTREACH
Another
excellent way of connecting with folks within the congregation,
and those in the community, is working together on a special service
project. Please consider participating in one or more of the following
opportunities:
Summer
Mission Trip
For the past ten years, our Senior Youth Fellowship has embarked
upon an annual mission trip sometime during the months of June or
July. Experiences have included:
-
renovating row homes in the inner city of Baltimore
-
working at a soup kitchen in Washington, DC
-
helping
with home repair in rural eastern Tennessee
-
assisting
with hurricane recovery efforts in eastern North Carolina
-
caring
for children from East St. Louis at a rural camping center
-
helping
with home repair in rural West Virginia
-
helping
with home repair in rural North Carolina
Although the emphasis of these trips is placed on the youth, adults
are always welcome and needed.
For
the summer of 2007, our group will again partner with Carolina Cross
Connection (www.carolinacrossconnection.org)
in performing home repairs for impoverished homeowners somewhere
in North Carolina. This year’s trip will be held July 15-21.
The locale will be announced closer to the date of the trip. Contact
Nora Driver at 584-5375 for more information.
Tape
Delivery
Each week, volunteers deliver tape recordings of our worship service
to any sick or shut-in members who requests them. For those who
need them, tape players can be provided as well. If you would like
to volunteer for this ministry, contact Frances Hindman at 449-5580.
Meals
on Wheels
(www.mealcall.org)
Volunteers are needed once every four weeks to help deliver a hot
noon-time meal to homebound persons in our county. It takes about
an hour to deliver meals to the different participants. For more
information, please contact Max Jones at 584-5367.
Our
congregation also helps deliver meals for MOWS on the day of Christmas
Eve. Each carrier receives 3-4 meals to deliver, requiring less
than an hour of your time. Contact Steve Balog at 228-0444.
Good
Shepherd Community Kitchen
Preparing and serving lunch on behalf of the Good Shepherd Kitchen
on Memorial Day and Labor Day. Conctact Frances Hindman at 449-5580.
CROP
Walk (www.churchworldservice.org/CROP)
In cooperation with Church World Service, the Alamance County CROP
Walk is held the first Saturday of October. Congregations and agencies
throughout our community come together to walk a 6.2 mile course
in an effort to raise money for hunger relief efforts. Of the funds
raised, 25% remains in our county and 75% supports national and
global ministries. If you would like to walk this fall, contact
Phil Myers at 226-7346.
Relay
for Life
(www.relayforlife.org)
Relay for Life is a fun-filled overnight event designed to celebrate
survivorship and raise money for research and programs of your American
Cancer Society. During the event, teams of people gather at schools,
fairgrounds, or parks and take turns walking or running laps. Each
team tries to keep at least one team member on the track at all
times.
Opportunities
for becoming involved include: Walking. Sponsoring a walker.
Providing snacks and supplies for the team. The 2007 event is scheduled
for May 18.
Loaves
& Fishes Food Pantry (www.loavesandfishes.us)
In addition to including this ministry in our annual budget, we
are committed to helping Loaves and Fishes keep their shelves stocked.
At least four times a year we make a special appeal to collect non-perishable
food items. In the fall of 2006, we joined efforts with four other
UCC churches and filled up four pick-ups with food.
Other
opportunities for becoming involved include:
(1) Helping make home deliveries. Routes include four people, all
in the same area.
Time estimate = 30 minutes.
(2) Help Make Sandwiches for the Elderly. Program is conducted the
2nd & 4th
Saturdays of each month. Volunteers make the sandwiches and deliver
them to two complexes. Time estimate = 1 hour
(3) Work at Night. Some churches come at night to stock shelves
and prepare bags
for delivery the next day.
If you would like to volunteer for any of these programs, please contact
either Frances Hindman (516-3418) or Brenda Ingle (570-4668).
The
Willows
Through a $3 million grant that our congregation received from HUD,
we are helping provide low cost housing for 40 elderly persons with
limited income. Located on property that the church once used as
a ball field, the building is an impressive structure.
Although a management company is responsible for the day-to-day
operation of the facility, a board of directors provides general
supervision and oversight. The board consists of six church members
and three representatives of the United Church Retirement Homes.
Outreach to residents of The Willows has been provided in various
shapes and frms. Some of our women’s circles have held special
parties, our youth and children occasionally make gifts and deliver
them, and our pastor has conducted various studies.
For a tour of the facility, or for more information on how someone
might qualify for acceptance, contact Brandy Edmonds, the on-site
manager, at 228-0597 or the-willows@cmc-nc.com.
The Willows is managed by United Church Homes and Services. Visit their website at www.uchas.org.
